Matěj Frank
artist, sculptor
I am a sculptor, which for me means that I think in spatial relationships. I am interested in the real as well as symbolic tension between the human body and the environment, and alongside sculptural-architectural installations I also involve the body directly in my work. In sculptures, reliefs, but also drawings and performances, I capture its fragility and transience in our trembling world. At present I am working on my projects near Vienna or near Olomouc. I have worked as an assistant in sculpture studios at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Poland, and I occasionally take part in organizing exhibitions. I have experience with preparing projects for public, private, and independent institutions and initiatives in the Czech Republic as well as abroad.
I can help applicants with various aspects of artistic practice. For example, through consultations and conversations I can support the development of authorial projects, or help with the planning and preparation of an exhibition – from initial concepts and the realization of works and models to the search for technical and technological solutions, or with the preparation of a catalogue. I can consult on projects or applications, but I cannot search for or write them. The mentee should be the one who brings the topics that we discuss and work on together. I am open both to several months of intensive work on a specific project and to accompanying a mentee throughout the year, during which we can respond together to newly emerging impulses. Depending on the nature of the project, we can meet in your studio. It is also possible to do several days of intensive work in my studio, where I can introduce, for example, working with metal, or we can experiment with other materials. I do not consider materials to be illustrative tools, but rather a way of thinking and expression, and I believe that a wide spectrum of experience opens the door to further ideas. I will be happy to provide feedback and motivate the mentee toward further progress.
